What's the story?

Long, Long, Ago

In Year 1 the children learn through a range of exciting and interesting topics. We love working practically to engage and motivate the children to build on their foundation stage experience.

Children will learn English through the Read Write Inc programme so that they are well prepared for their Phonics Screening check in June. We also provide a range of Maths opportunities for the children to problem solve and become more confident and fluent when working with mathematical concepts.

In our topics we will cover National Curriculum objectives in History, Geography, Science, the Arts (Music, Drama, Art, Dance) DT, RE, PE, Computing, Please see above for our termly themes.

Reading in Year 1

Hello children and parents!

As a Year 1 team, we have gathered together some very useful website links, resources and ideas of activities for you to use at home to help with your learning.

READING –

Please read the very important information letter (above) about reading in Year 1.

We suggest your child should read at least 3 times a week and continue to record this in their organiser. This will still count towards any current reading challenges in school. Create a quiz to check your child’s understanding or what they have read. Can they write some sentences about the story or what they have found out from a non fiction book. Don't forget that reading recipes and instructions for games are good chances for reading practice too. Other examples are comics, magazines, and online blogs.

Inside the organiser, there are a small number of resources which can be used to help further develop the children's learning of shapes, spellings, and many other things.

Please see the nonsense word list to practice reading nonsense words ready for the Phonics Screening Check.

WRITING –

For spelling practice, please see the Year 1 Spelling List. Children should be able to read and spell all of the words on the list. For further extension, try to read and spell the months of the year and number words eleven to twenty.

Spellings will be given out weekly (see the Year 1 Newsletter for more information.)

MATHS – Engage with the ‘Lesson’ and ‘Homework’ sections of the activities set on the MyMaths website (https://login.mymaths.co.uk/). This includes re-visiting both sections of tasks already set in order to consolidate learning from earlier in the year, and completing recently-set tasks.

Work on the Big Maths learn-its and Click Test questions that are sent home each week. Set similar style questions for your child and change them to provide more challenge if needed, e.g change 1 digit + 1 digit addition to 2 digit add 1 digit addition.

SCIENCE –

Our project homework letter often suggests homework tasks that are linked to our science topics. A science focus throughout Year 1 is Seasonal Change. At home, why not make a rain gauge and keep a record of the amount of rainfall? With your child, keep a weather diary, and watch weather reports and practice being a weather reporter in front of an audience.

Stay healthy and stay happy  and thank you for visiting, reading and continuing to support your child's education.
