Our Curriculum

CURRICULUM DESIGN

St John’s is a family within which learning and development is at its very heart. This is why our school’s curriculum is both broad and balanced planned to enable pupils to acquire the skills necessary to succeed in life becoming happy, healthy, successful citizens.  School, for us is about Living, Laughing and Learning Together and this is truly reflected in our day to day life.

Our Curriculum has been designed to ensure each and every child can flourish by offering stimulating learning experiences with our Christian values at its heart. We have looked carefully at the National Curriculum and our Christian Values and have designed a curriculum that is purpose-built for our school community.

We believe our curriculum centres on that which our children require to flourish academically, morally and spiritually.

We ensure that our curriculum meets our children’s needs, not only by focussing on appropriate subject-specific knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum, but by modelling the virtues given to us by God, developing a can-do attitude, a sense of responsibility and service so that they become well-rounded, individuals. There is a strong emphasis throughout the school on reading from the initial building blocks of phonics, through to building fluency. We develop a confidence in comprehension and an understanding of what is read and above all fostering a “Love” of reading.

We have long term plans for each year group which share the opportunities for the quality first teaching and learning our children will be part of, as well as any additional trips or visits and extra-curricular provision.

Our curriculum provides a “wow” factor to learning and this is our passion.

We have designed our curriculum ensuring it is broad, balanced and offers children opportunities to grow as individuals, enabling them to positively contribute as members of our family as well as becoming learners for life. We believe in building confidence and resilience through risk taking and encourage the children to be brave and bold in their choices. We actively promote knowing, understanding, applying, analysing, creating and evaluating – leading to deeper higher level thinking

We are also deeply committed to offering our children new and exciting experiences through engaging curricular activities and extra-curricular activities helping to build resilience, confidence and self-esteem. These experiences will take place in and out of our classrooms, in our community and beyond.

Children will also learn about and develop understanding of other cultures and heritages that are in Britain as well as globally.

Team St John’s values the different ways in which pupils learn and this is evident in the lessons in school.  We use themed days / weeks that link to both subject content and coverage and also to our pupils’ development within PSHE and SMSC. Teachers highly value cross-curricular links where possible.

Where specific needs are identified they are supported through carefully planned and delivered interventions in small groups or on a 1:1 basis.  These enable ALL children to work hard to flourish and reach their own potential.

St John’s offers an enriching curriculum where children may partake in wide and varied experiences.  We are an Artsmark Platinum school, valuing the arts as a conduit to opening up the learning of all, removing inhibitions and developing appreciation and empathy.  We acknowledge though that all children are different and have a range of different interests. We are also a STEM ambassador school, offer a wealth of sporting activities and are also highly inclusive valuing the provision we offer for our children with highly complex needs.

Phonics is taught using the Read Write Inc scheme of work, which the children enjoy. Maths is taught through White Rose maths and focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
